We are a diverse community of learners who practice positive discipline, employ a social-emotional curriculum, and use inquiry-based learning to keep students engaged. Our students have chosen our charter school as an alternative to traditional schools because we accommodate individual needs of students, and honor student voice in coming up with solutions. Many of them have found that their needs are not being met in traditional schools where their differences are seen as a problem rather than an asset.

We foster and encourage learning styles based on the individual needs of all students. Many students need accommodations in the form of focus tools, and other objects with various textures. At our school, we create a class culture where every student feels comfortable expressing their own voice, and sharing their unique personality. Rather than expecting students to learn the way we teach, we try to teach the way they learn best.
My Project
We have been on the lookout for interesting (and mainly handheld) objects – known as “fidgets” – to boost our kids’ focus at school. However, not any old fidget will do. The most effective focus tools are inexpensive, silent, unobtrusive, tactile objects that do not create a distraction themselves. We have researched these tools and found the best ones for our students.
These tools will be used in our classroom cool down zone where students can take a break, cool down, reset, and come back ready to learn.
My co-teacher and I are working hard on teaching our students self-regulation techniques, and the monkey rings and Tangle Jr puzzles allow kids to use their hands to redirect their energy in a positive way. The spiky sensory rings and fiddlinks fidget tools will give our students something to hold while they practice mindfulness.
We are also trying to help our students settle down to work at their desks. The Bouncy Bands will help students who need to move their feet, so that they can take fewer breaks and stay involved with the lesson. Sitting on the Balance Ball Chair engages the core, helps with focus and attention, and provides a spot for active learning.
