Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is in a high-risk Title I school in an urban setting. We have 40% of our students living in temporary housing. I teach reading with very limited resources and time restraints. To rectify this we are creating thematic units that connect the reading, writing, and social studies curriculum.
This is an opportunity for our scholars to have a strong thematic unit of study that goes across the curriculum with the goal of doing less in order to go deeper.
Research shows that when students read, write and learn around a specific topic they retain more, have richer conversations and write more.
Our school was the first Bucket Filling school in our city that focuses on Social-Emotional Learning to create mindful citizens. Creating thematic units enable us to build in the content with global and social themes. Scholars have rich discourse and debate about themselves and the world around them.
My Project
Having headphones for our students will help enormously. When students are reading on myON- our e-reading site, it is distracting to have multiple students reading and listening without headphone. This created distractions and a louder learning environment and makes it hard for other students working in different stations. Having headphones will also allow teachers to create small listening stations for students who are English language learners and for those students who struggle with reading.
In grades 3 to 5, the older elementary students really love to learn on their own.
They research and use multi-media resources. Teachers also create padlets that send students to educational videos to learn independently. Having headphones creates the the focus and the quiet that students need to learn online.
