This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with a targeted group of students that I support to provide them with guidance, resources, and tutorials to make sure they are passing all of their classes and are eligible to attend a University. Attending school and getting to class on time is a big issue for my students. Students don't always see the long-term impact of their poor attendance on their academic achievement and this project aims to create incentives to motivate students to improve their attendance.

There is a quote that says “if you focus on the negative, you miss all the positive around you.” Rather than punish and focus on the students who are not attending class or are late to class, I’d like to take a different approach and reward students who are in class and on time doing what is expected of them.

My class and lessons focus a lot on character development, mindfulness, and goal setting. My students tend to exhibit extrinsic motivation and tend to work harder if there are incentives and knowing that they will be rewarded with something tangible. I will run a monthly report on students’ attendance and tardies. Students who have met attendance goals will be rewarded with a gift card or a bag of treats. It’s a little step that may motivate students to reach their attendance goals if they know there is a prize involved. Hopefully their improvement in attendance will also reflect in improvement in their grades.
