Every class at our school starts with an "entry task" -- something to engage and hook the learners into the lesson. Thereafter students participate in close readings, class discussions, and interactive projects that bring learning alive.
Our school is located in Central Harlem, just a few blocks from 125th Street.
Most of our youngsters come from either the surrounding neighborhood, or the Bronx. We have full classes of twenty-five students per class, and two classes per grade-level. Our school is deeply committed to ensuring that each and every student thrives by partnering with parents and local organizations to provide students with the resources they need to make academic progress. During the day, each child receives instruction in mathematics, English, Social Studies, and Science; after school students take classes in art, music, and dance.
My Project
During each lesson students benefit from seeing texts projected on the overhead. Unfortunately, the document camera that we currently have displays an inadequate image, and as a result students are often unable to see the image clearly. A document camera allow instructors to easily share texts, which can then be annotated through class discussions -- in this way, teachers can guide students to engage in "close readings" which is a cornerstone of the new Common Core Standards. By showing students how to comprehend a text through the "live" feed that a document camera provides learning is exciting, and valuable instructional time is used effectively.
With a new document camera, instruction will be seamless: minutes will be not lost during which students are awaiting the device's "autofocus".
The more instructors are able to demonstrate -- and model for students -- how to comprehend a text, the more successful students will be when they attempt tasks independently. With a new document camera, our classroom will be well equipped to empower students with the skills they need to master the sixth grade standards!
