Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students come from a highly diverse and culturally rich area. My school, part of Ogden Public Schools, is a majority minority district where 58% (majority Hispanic), make up my classes. This is more than the Utah public school average of 27% (majority Hispanic). My students are somewhat below proficient in reading comprehension. Many are significantly below grade level and need a great deal of remediation. A challenge that many face is the ability to stay focused in class. My classes have anywhere from 25 to 30 students and reading comprehension ranges from 2nd grade to high school levels in any given class. In order to help my students, it is important for me to be able to work with individuals and small groups. While I am facilitating a small group, some of my lower readers have a hard time staying focused. Having a way to create a space for them that can lessen these distractions would help them so much.
