I teach Civics at a K-8 school with students from low socioeconomic families. Many of my students are struggling readers. In Florida, students are required to take a standardized Civics exam at the end of the year. It is worth 30% of their overall grade. This is difficult for many students because the Civics Exam requires students to read excerpts from actual historical documents. I have achieved 75% pass rate the last 4 years but would like to reach 85% this year. I would like your help to keep their focus away from their cell phone with a lock box and supplies to create flash cards.
With your donation, I can purchase a cell phone storage lock box and I will purchase flash cards.
The cell phone lock box will keep their focus on school work. Although cell phones can be helpful, its the weakness of teenagers, and I spend a lot of time stopping class to ask students to put away the phone. As for the flashcards, I have learned that if you provide the cards, the students will make flashcards. If you ask them to do it at home, well they don't always get it done. Many students who completed flashcards last year performed very well on the Civics test. With your help, I can help focus my students by locking up their phones and building their vocabulary with flash cards.
