Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a third grade teacher at an elementary school in the San Fernando Valley. I believe this school has a true diverse enrollment. It has been a great benefit to have the diversity, the students help each other and learn from each other. In the six years I have been there I have had the pleasure of working with at least seven different cultures.
Being a small school we are limited in funds.
We have a large number of special education students that mainstream into the classrooms. From dyslexia to autism to ADHD, all students take part in learning. We are a title one school, which means most of our students receive free or reduced meals.
My Project
A teacher loaned me a seat cushion for one student, for a day. It helped my student focus and complete his assignments. He didn't bother other students. I was amazed at the difference. Considering I have more than one student with ADHD, I thought "I could use a few of these."
It is difficult to comprehend, however there are students in third grade that do not know how to hold a pencil.
These pencil grips will assist students before they move on to the next grade. As they get older, they write more. Learning how to hold a pencil is critical.
