My Students
Enthusiastic, excited, social and eager would all be words I can use to describe my class. Despite their academic limitations, they are eager to please and always willing to help a staff member or student in need. They come from a diverse set of ethnic and religious backgrounds ranging all over Queens, NY. In addition, many of my students are coming from low socio-economic backgrounds where they don't have the access to community activities and outings. My students have a variety of disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, Autism and Intellectual Disability. They range in age from 11 to 13, from verbal to nonverbal. Despite their apparent disabilities, they have many abilities that make them unique and special.
My Project
The above named materials will provide our students with deep pressure input to muscles and joints, which may help students achieve a more organized and calm state at school. In turn, students who are calm and mentally organized are more prepared to listen, learn and attend during the school day, as well as retain information they have learned.
These materials will also help the students develop body awareness and this will help them better interact with the environment around them.
Many of our students have difficulty organizing information from their own bodies in relation to their environment. This results in them being very lethargic and unfocused in school which makes learning difficult.
