Flying 4th Graders: Environmental Science, Technology, and Drones

Help me give my students 4, codable Parrot Drones that can survey our local watershed, analyze run-off and erosion, and provide meaningful experiences in the field of science and technology.

My Students

Kids are craving more! I keep seeing that, when given the opportunity, they want to take on new challenges. They want to collaborate, use their hands, their imagination, and their academic knowledge to solve problems. Throughout the day, I teach 80 students math and science, while also incorporating a STEM Lab within the classroom. However, we are seeing a bigger need.

The kids have shown interest in the field of ecology and their ability to analyze watersheds, habitats within them, and the effects of pollution on our local environment.

We have been learning about our local watershed and it's direct effects on the creek that runs near our school grounds.

I try to do everything I can to meet students where they are and empower them to become all they are capable of being. We have been one of the top Title I schools over the past few years in student growth and performance. We qualify as a Title I school because many of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch due to low socioeconomic status. Despite some of their struggles in life, they deserve to have free, student-centered opportunities that help mold them toward future careers of interest.

My Project

Even at the age of 8 and 9, my students are dreamers. They are passionate about the environment, excited about technology, and they love programming. These drones have the ability to equip themselves with various accessories. They can have a camera, but can also control a grabbing and launching system.

Our goal was to figure out a way to analyze our local watershed and ecosystem through the use of small, codable drones that can capture an aerial view of the land.

We plan to simulate the abilities of larger drones by developing drone-executed systems that can drop or launch water onto spreading forest fires, deliver supplies to needy areas, or even help relocate animals. We are also excited to be able to analyze the slope of the land along with the characteristics of our local ecosystem to develop environmental goals within our school grounds and community.
