Fly into Reading with Poppi by Avi

My students need a class set of the book Poppy to follow along with read-aloud.

My Students

Remember what it was like to read aloud to your children or when your teacher read aloud to you. I remember the story in 4th grade that touched me.

We are a small neighborhood school with over half our students receiving free or reduced price lunches.

I would love to sit with each student and have us read a book together. We have read four books together and I am out of classroom sets of books. My students are a great mix. Our classroom is racially and ethnically diverse which makes some great discussions and they love to help each other.

My Project

With the increased emphasis in reading and math, science seems to fall to the side. Poppy is a fiction book about a mouse and an owl. We can use it as a springboard to introduce science and peak interest in the bones and life-cycles. Poppy is a great book which has a very realistic portrayal of the relationships between owls and mice and other creatures in the forest.

We are finishing our last classroom set of books.

If we don't have another book to read as a class, my students will lose interest in reading and we lose the chance to peak more interest in science.
