My Students

Want to know more about this project? Please do a quick image search for Fly Guy. My first graders are in love with this book series. Unfortunately, our school library only has two Fly Guy books.

The library is at a K-8 Center in South Florida.

Let me tell you something about our kids. Most of our students are first-generation Americans. Their parents are from the Caribbean or Latin America. Our moms and dads tend to have low-paying jobs in the local tourism industry. Why should you help out these children? 1) Our students love to read. 2) Our kids are unlikely to have English language books at home. 3) We don't have an affluent PTA to help us. The school library really runs on Donors Choose.

My Project

It is great when children latch onto a book series like Fly Guy. They feel they have to read every book in the series. Well, you would too, wouldn't you? That means that the first graders will get through twelve books. Fly Guy will really motivate our kids to read - and to come to the library with their parents. The kids have already learned that, if they come to the library after school with mom or dad, they are allowed to check out extra books.
