Flutter By, Butterfly!

My students need materials to see the life cycle of the butterfly.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Carico's classroom raised $260

My Students

Have you ever learned better by actually seeing something, rather than just reading about it it? My kindergarteners will learn about the life cycle of the butterfly, but currently we have only written material. This project will create a butterfly classroom.

We have 24 precocious, smart, and inquisitive kindergarteners eager to learn.

To stimulate their minds and engage them in real world learning, we want to witness the butterfly life cycle and apply our learning to the full curriculum. We are enrolled in a high poverty school that is part of a district facing large deficits in California. In addition, over half our students are learning English as a second language, making the ability to see what we are reading about even more important.

My Project

As children read about the life cycle of butterflies, I would like them to see the full life cycle unfold from larva to butterfly and to use the life cycle material in an integrated curriculum. We will purchase five butterfly kits, which will have enough larvae for every student to watch "their" caterpillar develop from larva to chrysalis and finally to adult butterfly. Aside from descriptive books, the life cycle information, including stamps (purchased separately) depicting it, will generate English skills as students orally sequence the pictured events. Math skills will be developed by counting chrysalises and emerging butterflies, and then graphing the number at first weekly and then daily. Children will illustrate their observations and be able to label each component of the insect. We also will select some activities from the Activity Book. Finally, we have a a butterfly flower garden just outside our door where we can link classroom learning to real world ecology.

Project support will make butterflies real for our students, rather than something to read about in a book.

Students will be able to see how a butterfly classroom can help them not only in science but in English and math.
