My students need new flutes for the beginner band. The instruments are very old and beyond repair. We have many students eager to learn without the materials to use.

My Students
With the growing emphasis on test taking and the rigorous academics facing children at the elementary school level students need more ways to expand and have outlets. Music has become that in our school. More and more students are taking up an interest in music and we have run out of instruments.
Working at a school in NYC it is not hard to recognize the broad spectrum of students from different socio-economic backgrounds.
We have an even mix of students with a passion for the arts but without the ability to pursue it because of the economic crisis we have been facing over the years. Children more and more need an outlet and opportunity to explore other things. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and all have the ability but don't have the tools needed. Learning music will give these students another way of expressing themselves and finding out if they are good at something other than reading or math.
My Project
This project is important because it is something that will give to our school community for the next 20 years. Children will always remember their elementary school years of being in the band and playing concerts. These instruments are vital in having children write the scripts to their lives. Experiences help inspire. Knowing that someone cared outside of our school community will inspire these children. Our motto is "Pay it Forward". This is an opportunity for them to see it from a different perspective. Someone will have paid it forward to them.
