My students need fluency timers, cards, practice boards, and two teaching guides in order to practice and improve their reading fluency.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Demro's classroom raised $560

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A fluent reader is a proficient reader! In order to read and comprehend text, a person must be able to decode the words they are saying with emotion! This shows true understanding, and comprehension cannot happen until they are fluent in reading. Help our students become readers for life!
Our students are fifth graders in a low income area where most students are on free and reduced lunch.
We are also a school composed of 84% English language learners, so meeting the California standards takes extra work and very targeted instruction. However, we as staff and our students are doing it with a lot of hard work! After many years of not meeting our goals, our school was restructured and we recently exited Program Improvement under No Child Left Behind. While we are proud of this, there is more to come and now we need supplies to get our students to the next level.
My Project
Students will use the requested timers, fluency cards, and practice boards during group work times while I am meeting with other small groups. This independent practice will engage them and help them to improve their comprehension. The guides will help me plan effective instruction to make this time and my fluency teaching more powerful with proven techniques from well-known leaders in literacy learning methods.
In our class, I have learners that range from newcomers who speak no English (they are now learning) to advanced students, so we need a broad range of fluency materials since there is a broad range of reading levels. It is not a coincidence that my students that have very low fluency consistently perform below grade level because they are not able to decode let alone make meaning of grade level texts. These resources will be motivating to students and make a big difference in their fluency rate which will as a result increase their literacy and push them to the next level.
The state of funding education is dire right now, and we have almost no money for supplies.
However we have a high needs population, and the demands of teaching increase each year with less support from our government. Donating and funding this project will truly impact years of learners and provide the materials and motivation to make something that sometime seems burdensome to students much more engaging and exciting. Thank you!
