Fluency Fun!

My students need six digital voice recorders and an all-in-one printer to assist them in building their reading fluency.

My Students

Do you know what it feels like to not be able to read fluently? Many of my students struggle with reading fluency; this is sometimes embarrassing.

Passages Charter School prides itself in catering to the needs of refugee and immigrant students.

There are 21 brilliant students in my fourth grade class. More than half of the students in my class are English Language Learners. Despite the language barriers my students are all eager to learn and become fluent readers!

My Project

The SIX video recorders and printer will be used to build a fluency center within our classroom reading period. Students will use the materials to monitor their own fluency. For example, students will be required to record themselves reading a page out of their library book. Next, students will playback their recording so that they are able to hear and rate their reading. Finally, students will make a copy of the page that they read so that I will be able to follow along as I listen and analyze their recording. Activities such as the above stated example are sure to assist students in building their reading fluency. Students will also learn how to monitor their own progress. In turn, students will learn to be responsible. Building reading fluency has been proved to assist with reading comprehension. Being a fluent reader may help build my student's self-esteem and encourage them to excel not only in our classroom but in the world.
