Fluency Frenzy for Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders
My students need these MP3 players and headphones to be part of an individualized fluency program where they listen to good readers and increase their own fluency.
They say that "Practice makes perfect." but some of our students don't have the opportunity to do extra reading at home due to lack support and literature. This program will allow them to use school time and practice their fluency with a researched based program.
Our school is one of the rural schools in Utah.
It is a K-5 school with 2 or 3 classes in each grade. Many students live on a farm, have chores to do both inside and outside. We have a strong family based community, and parents work hard to maintain their homes. Students at our school are kind and respectful. They have a desire to do better and work hard for what they get.
My Project
The teachers want help for those students who may be "At Risk" in reading to ensure their future success. We are requesting some MP3 players and better headphones for students to use with a purchased fluency program. They will do repeated readings as they listen to good readers, set a goal to obtain and work on vocabulary and comprehension. This can be done independently and it is geared to each student's level.
The state and local leaders have set reading goals for our students that will be compared to other districts and states.
Our teachers are good at addressing student learning, but if they can use an individualized program using some technology it's like having an extra hand in the classroom.
