My Students
Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. The biggest barrier to comprehension is reading fluency. Less than 15% of students have comprehension problems if they read accurately and faster than 80 words per minute.
My students are the hardest workers there are.
They come from some extremely hard situations and range from some support at home, to absolutely no support at home, to supporting younger siblings at home at the age of 7. Most of my students are from low income families and many of my students come to school hungry and depend on the school for most or all of their meals. Yet they come to school and are able to put all of that aside and work hard for 8 hours each day and accomplish so much. I feel that it is my job to do everything in my power to be as successful as possible and have fun while learning so they can forget all their other worries and stay focused on learning for those 8 hours each day.
My Project
My students are very diverse and as a result have a very diverse set of needs. In order to meet these needs when it comes to reading I need a set of fluency cards for all my reading levels. It has been shown that if the reading is too easy or too hard it really won't do much to help them improve their reading skills. So, having a variety of leveled cards for practice will make it possible for all my students to practice and build their fluency skills at the same time.
To make the fluency practice more exciting for my students I also need a set of reader's theaters. The students always love practicing with readers theaters and the reading rereading of their scripts helps build their fluency skills while having fun and building the social skills and leadership skills of performing in front of others.
Your donations will help give my students a fun way to practice fluency.
You will also be providing a way to reach all my students from my beginning readers to my students who are reading several grade levels ahead. Right now my materials cover about 10% of my class while my struggling readers get frustrated and lose hope in ever being able to read and my advanced readers are bored and lose the excitement in reading.
