My students live in an area of highest poverty. Many come from single-parent families and/or are even helping to raise their own siblings. More than 70% of our school receives free or reduced-price lunches. A lot of times students are unable to buy their own school supplies.
Our students are smart and willing to learn, but because they lack resources, it is not always easy for them to focus just on learning.
I encourage hands-on projects because the students don't always realize they are learning if they are having fun! I always encourage them to have the "I can" attitude and not to let anything stand in the way of their success.
My Project
Students will use the Herbarium press to press and save botanical specimens they have personally collected. They will identify and label these specimens with the colored pens. The specimens will then be laminated and made into a book for each student, showcasing their collected botanical specimens.
The botanical specimen book will be an invaluable learning tool and a lasting keepsake for each student.
The students are very excited when they see their efforts of collecting, pressing, labeling, and laminating their flowers and leaves come to fruition. The students are very proud of their work. They have an actual specimen to see and to touch.
