This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Lighthouse Academy is an alternative program that supports all schools and students in the Tolleson Union High School District. Students attending Lighthouse Academy need social/emotional supports and opportunities to re-engage in their learning process so they may return to their home schools. Just the other day one of our students stated, “One thing that the regular school is better at than Lighthouse is the socializing part." The opportunity to socialize and engage with their peers is a crucial part of our students’ attachment to education. Implementing a special opportunity for reading and writing and socializing will help to support learning and acclimation to the social climate that existed prior to COVID-19 and thus, support our students’ ability to return to their home campuses, with friends, sports, clubs, and all that our schools have to offer.

“Flor-Y-Canto Café” or “Flower and Song Café”, in name, is a tribute to the process of reading, writing, and sharing knowledge of Nahuatl people.

In our case, “Flor-Y-Canto Café” will support reading, writing, and sharing of knowledge with a special touch of coffee, espresso, and snacks. The books selected are specific to empowerment, identity, social justice, and create a multi-faceted lens that will help our students connect to themselves and fellow students’ humanity and support their will to positively engage in their own lives. The coffee and espresso will add a special kick start to this process.

With your donation to this project, students will have the opportunity to pick up a book that is at their reading level and introduce characters that are representative of them, their peers, and their communities. “Flor-Y-Canto Café” will support socialization and increase engagement in reading and writing by creating a warm environment where students are free to be themselves and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee.
