My amazing self-contained math and science class at Walter P. Carter Elementary Middle is comprised of 15 amazing students with varying learning disabilities and learning needs. They are ambitious, motivated, and full of personality — and they are determined to learn no matter the circumstances.
These students are resilient, creative, and ready to maximize their educational potential.
With access to new technology that is commonplace in well-funded schools around the country, my students will continue to rewrite the narrative of special education students in Baltimore City. After getting to know each other this year, I can confidently say their story is already one of success.
Flipped learning is the future of education, and the future of special education. Flipped learning, which consists of working through concepts and problems in class and doing learning online, provides students more time in class to do hands-on learning and independence in their online learning.
Access to laptops will give students the one-on-one attention and differentiation — which all students with disabilities need and deserve.
One Chromebook at a time, our students will gain the opportunity to be a part of a classroom environment and a culture that fosters, cares, and nurtures them. My students in my self-contained class should not be deprived of an excellent education simply because of economic constraints and inequity. Thank you in advance for helping end educational inequity in special ed classrooms!
