This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an AP Biology teacher I find classroom time to be very precious. This year I have started to flip my classroom in order to allow more practical lab time during class. I want my students to be able to feel comfortable using college level equipment by the time they are done with my class.

My students come from all walks of life.

I have students who live in very affluent neighborhoods 5 minutes away from school as well as students who commute over an hour from the inner city in order to attend our school. Students in my class have a genuine curiosity about life. I do not mean life in the metaphorical meaning, but the literal one. They want to know how things are and how they interrelate and they want to perform a lab every day. I try my hardest to nurture this curiosity which seems to become more rare as the years pass. My school has grown our science program from a few electives just 6 years ago to offering every AP science class available through College Board.

My Project

In order to allow more practical time in the class I have began to flip my AP Biology class. This is a feat on its own. The most difficult aspect has been the need for technology in order to allow for a successful flip. The videos have to be interactive as well as informational and I find myself wanting to explain sketch mechanisms and processes. The iPad, as well as the interactive board, will allow me to better edit and incorporate different platforms into the videos to allow for better understanding. The students will also be able to use the interactive board and iPad in class for data recording and collection during lab. The slides as well as the micropipettors will help enrich the laboratory I have spent the last 5 years trying to build. The slides will be used to observe organisms and different types of cells which the students need to understand to better grasp big ideas in the units we study. The micropipettors will be used for a number of biotechnology labs.

Making sure students feel comfortable with technology as well as handling lab equipment is a skill I believe to be necessary to be a successful science major.

My students will leave my class having mastered many laboratory techniques as well as having a better understanding of how technology can positively influence their learning. I believe these are instrumental skills for anyone wanting to delve deeper into the science field at a higher level.
