This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders will continue their learning adventure in the center of a small, urban district. Our school is a Title I school with approximately seven hundred students in grades K-5. The student body has a large percentage of English Learners. Eighty-five percent of our students are minorities and over eighty percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Within this challenge is strength and determination, as our school strives to close the achievement gap while growing confident and successful learners.
First grade is setting the foundation for a lifetime of inquiry and a love for learning.
These little scholars are at an age when everything is still new and exciting and their quest to know "how?" and "why?" makes each day a joy to experience. I strive to provide them with experiences that will not only ignite a passion to wonder and question, but will also give them the skills to find the answers they seek.
My Project
A set of VersaTiles for math would provide my scholars with materials to develop proficiency with basic mathematical skills and concepts. These tiles are self-checking to allow scholars to increase independence and personal responsibility. Children need to touch and manipulate physical materials to build fine motor skills. They are also engaged when they can move and explore items.
In a heavily digital world, it is often challenging to find ways to engage learners in basic skill practice, so materials that students want to use are invaluable.
I would use these tiles as a center for independent work as well as during small groups with struggling learners who might need more support.
Since VersaTiles support national standards, I know my scholars will be practicing exactly what they need to know. I always strive to provide practical, yet fun activities that will build excitement and skills!
