My students need materials to help them learn about simple electrical circuits. They need eight Fundamentals of Electronics Kits, 20 Economy Bulb Holders, eight Knife Switch, Single Pole/Double Throws, and eight Knife Switch, Single Pole/Double Throws.
Without a good hands-on lab or activity, many students just don't "get" physics.
The students in my classroom are enrolled in AP Physics 1.
They learn about college-level physics topics while in the high school setting. Many of these students may earn college credit for their successful completion of this course.
These young adults are extremely intelligent and hard-working, but their education is limited due to budget cuts at our urban school. Since science lab equipment can be so expensive, it is often one of the first things removed from the school expenditure list. However, these materials are usually reusable year after year and have wide ranging effects on student understanding. Our school does not currently have a very large supply of equipment to study electricity and electrical circuits.
My Project
The electrical circuit supply kits and additional circuit components will be used by students to help them understand the way that electrical circuits work. While reading about them in textbooks and diagrams can be informative, it often helps students to create physical models of simple electric circuits. This helps them understand just how these systems behave (or don't!) when connected in different ways.
My students will build simple circuits based on diagrams in their textbooks. They will practice creating different set-ups that represent different types and uses for electrical circuitry. Eventually, my students will create simplified models of the electrical circuits in the school building and at home that mimic the operation of light switches and electrical outlets.
When my students receive the electrical circuit kits in this project, they will have an opportunity to interact with the concept of simple circuitry in a completely new manner.
They will have a hands-on experience that they can then relate to the function of their homes and generalize to the world around them. Additionally, my students will be helped in their understanding of electricity to better prepare them for their summative AP exam at the end of the school year.
