My students need alternative seating materials to give them the power of choice and help them become more active and engaged in learning.

My Students
I currently teach 5th grade at an urban school where 75% of our students school wide receive free or reduced lunch. Our students are also provided with breakfast daily. Next school year, I will be teaching 2nd grade.
I have 30 students in my 5th grade class who are constantly on the move, and I know that 2nd graders will be on the move constantly also!
More than once a day, I hear, "Why do we have to sit in these seats all day?" and "How can you expect a kid to sit still for this long." It is my goal to provide them with an education that not only fits curriculum expectations, but fits their individual and specific needs. Alternative seating options will allow for students to choose a space that is right for them to learn at the specific moment, and change their mind if they need to. My students will not be restricted to one spot for the entire day, will become more engaged, and burn calories in the process!
My Project
I am requesting multiple different seating options to transform my classroom into a flexible seating environment. These seating options include mats for students to sit on the floor, standing desks, stools, exercise balls, and wobble cushions. These options will give each student the opportunity to choose what works best for them while they are learning. Research has shown that alternative seating in classrooms has many positive benefits. My students will be able to choose where they sit for each portion of the day.
My project will make a difference because of the impact flexible seating has on students.
Flexible seating will allow my students to become more engaged in their own learning, motivated in their classwork, use up excess energy, improve metabolism, as well as improve behavior. Students will also be empowered by the opportunity to have a choice in their learning throughout their day.
