Flight Simulator for VHS AFJROTC Aviation Training

Help me give my students a flight simulator to encourage a possible pathway into aviation as well as consideration to be a military pilot. It gives the students basic skills to prepare for flying exams and builds confidence.

My Project

The flight simulator will give students a leg up in aviation training because it will familiarize students with basic skills of flying. Students can take this skill into our Civil Air Patrol Flight Orientation Program where students get four front seat rides and unlimited backseat rides in a single engine aircraft. In addition, the flight simulator will greatly enhance psychomotor skills, spatial ability and multi-taking aptitude. This will prepare students for the Air Force's Test of Basic Aviation Skills (TBAS) which is required to compete for a pilot billet. With better skills and knowledge, the student may also qualify for AFJROTC's Flight Academy program in which 300 cadets are hosted by 24 universities for 8-weeks flight training at no cost to the student. For this year, one of our cadets qualified for the Flight Academy and with the flight simulator, we hope to increase this number in the future.

In addition, the flight simulator will be an extension of our curriculum and will provide that hands-on experience for our "Science of Flight" course of study.

Because not all students will be a pilot, this allows for students to understand the importance of other aviation career fields to include logistics, maintenance, airfield management and operations, etc.

Why do the cadets deserve this project? In the unit's first full year of activation, the cadets have performed over 500 community service hours, provided Color Guard details to community and veteran events, and grew from a Cadet Corps of 28 to 54 cadets. Overall, they are a dedicated and motivated team that continues to foster equality, respect and support to each other.
