My students need flexible seating options to my resource room. I not only want to differentiate their learning experience, but also allow for different choices in seating.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an extremely unique school district. Many families are economically disadvantaged. Many families are first generation immigrants. Many families do not speak English. On top of that, they are not always getting their educational needs met due to budget cuts. Can you imagine no art class, no music class, or technology NOT in every classroom?
I am the lucky resource room teacher of a wonderful group of first, second, and third graders.
These students have various learning disabilities that require my teaching them in a new way. It can be a challenge, but meeting "my kids'" needs is my biggest priority and passion.
The come to my room for 45 minutes, 4 days a week. It is my job to make sure those 45 minutes pack a punch and give my kids the tools they need to succeed in their classroom.
My Project
I am hoping to add flexible seating options to my resource room. I not only want to differentiate their learning experience, but also allow for different choices in seating. The wobble stools, cushions and stability balls can be an overwhelming support to my students.
A flexible seating classroom is one in which traditional seating charts are replaced with seating arrangements that allow the students to seat where they choose.
Giving students ownership empowers them. When they feel that way, learning will come more naturally.
Studies show that these flexible seating options maximize attention span for students with disabilities. I am hoping to increase student engagement, rigor and excitement in the resource room.
