This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, I have had the pleasure of teaching and assisting in building our gifted program. I have a combination of 29- 4th and 5th grade students. They are smart, funny, witty, and highly capable students who deserve every resource money can buy to help them succeed in education and in life.
Although gifted, these students need variety, movement, and flexibility to perform their best in an optimal classroom setting.
Giftedness comes with its own quirkiness that needs someone who understands their differences. Each student is different in the way they learn, perform, makes friends and have fun etc. Giftedness also comes with a mind that is always in overdrive. This flexible seating arrangement increases students' focus, calms their mind and increases their scores.
My Project
We were all students at one time. Do you remember how boring and uncomfortable it was to sit in those cold hard plastic chairs? I strongly believe in students having the opportunity to sit or stand in a variety of ways to make learning more comfortable. Movement keeps the mind active. When the students remain stationary for long periods of time, their minds drift off and they lose focus. In previous years, my students have increased their handwriting, focus, grades, attention and test scores using flexible seating. My hope this year is to continue this with new ideas for my gifted learners.
My students need a plethora of flexible seating opportunities.
We currently have a few stability balls but there are not enough of them and some of the the students struggle using them. Wobble chairs/stools will help the students stabilize their bodies while working independently at their desks, tables and counters and help getting their wiggles out at the same time. During group work sitting on wobble cushions will allow them some comfort instead of sitting on the cold tile floor and allow them the flexibility to move around the classroom. Inflatable chairs give students the comfort of a beanbag chair and an area to read quietly in groups or independently.
