My Students

The students at my elementary school range in age from TK-5th grade. The rigors or curriculum are asking students to attend to instruction for longer periods of time, and do things that may be above their developmental or maturity level. Creating a comfortable space for students to learn share and grow will help them to build the skills and confidence they need to be successful learners.

The counseling office is a place where students come for comfort, support, and guidance.

As the rigors of the school day weigh on their growing minds, the counseling office becomes a sanctuary where they are not required to do or be anything but themselves. Students from: all backgrounds, cultures, academic abilities, physical abilities, skillsets are welcome in my office.

My Project

What if every child had what they needed to access their education? The traditional classroom is set up for student who can sit still and "pay attention." What if sitting still is hard? What if it is not developmentally appropriate? What if being able to choose the seat that worked best for you could help you access curriculum? In the counseling office, students get to learn tools and strategies they need to be successful. In the counseling office, we get to practice using wobble chairs, bouncy bands, thinking putty, mindfulness strategies, and positive self-talk so we can learn how we learn best. Once we unlock the ways we learn best we can apply them in the larger classroom setting. The materials in my office can be loaned to students to use in their classroom so they can find more successes.

For some kids being a flexible thinker is tricky, yet our curriculum assumes that children have the innate ability to cooperate and collaborate with others.

Mindfulness strategies, growth mindset, and coping tools can help our students become more flexible thinkers and better problem solvers. The books selected will help students learn coping skills, calm down strategies, emotional regulation and problem solving skills that will promote success academically and socially.
