My students need flexible seating options. They are high-energy and at times hard to get sitting still. If they had more options it would help them focus and succeed!
My students are a strong force each and every day. They are diverse, committed, and exceptionally energetic. We are located in Cary, North Carolina and come together each day as a kind of big family. Cary is a suburb outside of Raleigh and is a notorious relocation area. Therefore, our small school family is one of many different races, ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds.
One of my favorite things about my students is their high energy.
It opens the door to creating lessons that are tactile, interactive, and fun! My students are excellent collaborators and truly love learning. Teaching them is seriously an everyday adventure-- I wouldn't change it for the world.
My Project
Having multiple seating options would greatly improve the environment in my classroom. Our middle school is located in the basement with tile floors and fluorescent lights. When students enter my classroom I would like for it to be a place where they feel safe, calm, welcomed, and comfortable. We often tackle topics like social issues, free choice, diversity, and acceptance so having a safe space with comfortable seats helps kids open their minds and hearts. It creates a safe space where they can freely share their thoughts and opinions and feel comfortable doing so.
Flexible seating would also be life-changing for my 30 IEP/504 students.
Many of these students need accommodations that I cannot provide because I don't have access to flexible seating. Some of my students need a seat where they can bounce or cross their legs because of certain conditions. Some of my students need a corner of the room that is separate from distractions without making them feel like they are in trouble. Flexible seating would provide a space where those students feel comfortable, not embarrassed.
