My students need a small futon couch, saucer chair and extra thick yoga mats to help make flexible seating complete in our classroom.

My Students
My students are the best, but I may be slightly biased because they are mine! I work in an inner city Chicago Public School on the northwest side of Chicago. Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. We have students from all over the world and over 40 different languages are spoken within our community.
Currently, I teach a group of 25 diverse, energetic, kind, and caring second graders who are eager to learn and genuinely love coming to school.
All of my students come from many different backgrounds. The learning styles and academic abilities are quite vast, giving me the opportunity to provide a very tailored plan to suit their academic and social emotional needs. Although the needs vary, we have one thing in common...our dedication to learning!
My Project
Think about how hard it is for you to sit still in a chair all day...Flexible seating has taken off in the world of education! Our classroom piloted flexible seating this past year and it was an absolute success. My classroom is a mix of general education students and diverse learners that have various special needs. Therefore, it is important to provide all of my students the opportunity to learn in a way they see fit and is comfortable for them. Children should have different outlets and ways to wiggle and move while learning, not just during the standard brain break.
I believe that students should have the option to select a seat that will allow them to work independently and be successful.
Some students like to sit, some like to lay, some like to curl up in a ball in the corner, and some truly enjoy the comfort of sitting in a regular desk chair. The choices for flexible seating are endless and it is all about what works for your kids and classroom.
All of these seating options will enhance student learning in a MAJOR way. Students can use the futon couch to read or do work on a clipboard. The couch provides a flexible seating option, as well as giving our classroom a warm, homelike feeling. Yoga mats allow for a comfortable spot to engage in all types of learning. The mats are great for partner reading because both students can fit comfortably. The saucer chair is just one more option to add and students can use this how they see fit.
Flexible seating enhances student engagement and provides a nontraditional approach to learning! We were able to acquire many options for our classroom and these items will add the finishing touches.
