Flexible Seating...Options Enhance Learning!

My students need a wide variety of flexible seating options to enhance their learning in a manner that suits them best.

My Students

My students are the BEST...but I may be slightly biased because they are mine! I work in an inner city Chicago Public School on the northwest side of Chicago. Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. We have students from all over the world and over 40 different languages are spoken within our community.

Currently, I teach a wonderfully diverse group of students in the 2nd Grade Inclusion classroom.

All of my students come from many different backgrounds. The learning styles and academic abilities are quite vast, giving me the opportunity to provide a very tailored plan to suit their academic and social emotional needs. Although the needs vary, we have one thing in common...our dedication to learning!

My Project

Think about how hard it is for you to sit still in a desk chair all day...Flexible/alternative seating has really started to take off in the world of education and my hope is to provide them with this opportunity. My classroom is a mix of general education students and diverse learners that have various special needs. Therefore, it is important to provide all of my students the opportunity to learn in a way they see fit and is comfortable for them. Children should have different outlets and ways to wiggle and move while learning, not just during the standard brain break.

As a child in the classroom all day, I imagine how difficult it must be to sit in a hard desk chair with the expectation to sit still and stay engaged.

I believe that students should have options and choice in where they sit while working independently. Some students like to sit, some like to lay, some like to curl up in a ball in the corner, and some truly enjoy the comfort of sitting in a regular desk chair. The choices for flexible seating are endless and it is all about what works for your kids and classroom.

All of these seating options will enhance student learning in a MAJOR way. Students can bounce on a stability ball that cannot tip over. The choice to sit on a wiggle cushion will provide sensory options for students, along with strengthening their upper body muscles. A yoga mat allows a comfortable spot for all types of learning. We can curl up in a chair with a book, which is always a popular option. Last but not least, a child can get their wiggles out with the Hokki stool. Flexible seating enhances student engagement and provides a nontraditional approach to learning!
