My Students

This is my fourth year of teaching and second year teaching at my current school. This year I have seen 25 first-graders work hard and grow in their reading abilities.

My first-graders have had a year full of adjustments, but they are still learning and growing in their abilities every day.

My students have shown a lot of growth this year, especially in their reading. I was happy to see on a recent assessment that 80% of my students are reading at an "end-of-first grade" Lexile level. I hope to use the rest of this year to help my remaining students meet grade-level expectations and continue to prepare students for second grade.

My Project

I have been researching how flexible seating can have a positive impact on young students. This year my classroom was about 75% boys, and many of these boys had trouble sitting still and focusing on their work. A couple of teachers at my school had initiated flexible seating routines in their classrooms and saw improvement in student behavior and academics.

I have always been willing to try new things in the classroom in the hopes that it can improve student performance.

I hope these resources will give students a chance to find a seating arrangement that allows them to perform to their best ability. The wobble stools and stability ball seats will allow my most "wiggly" students an alternative to traditional classroom seats. These resources will allow students to move around comfortably and in a controlled way so that they can remain focused on tasks. The balance disks and bouncy bands will turn my current classroom seats into a more comfortable option and again allow students the option to fidget and move around without disrupting others. Finally, the classroom rug and seat cushions will provide and alternative seating option to those students who prefer to lay down or sit on the ground when completing school work and reading.

I hope that offering these different seating opportunities will encourage a more positive learning envirobment and help student understand how they work best. Allowing students to learn more about their own learning will help them throughout their educational careers.
