I have 140 fantastic, bright, eager, tenacious, and energetic sixth and seventh graders from the Hermosa/Logan Square community in Chicago.
They come from various cultural backgrounds and languages, creating a truly unique and diverse classroom.
Our school has a large ELL population and high needs for differentiation and authentic learning experiences. Our school is a family of teachers, support staff and learners that truly care about one another and work together to deliver the best for each and every one of our students.
Alternative seating studies show flexible seating is a classroom design that enhances a student-center approach to teaching and learning.
This flexible seating idea was designed to increase student engagement by allowing students to exercise choice when picking the best seating option for them.
This seating choice allows students to have control over their physical environment. The goal of flexible seating is to create an environment where the students feel they have a little more control over their learning and in turn will feel comfortable taking a leadership role.
My students come to school energetic and ready to learn every day! They need more flexible and comfortable seating options to enhance student engagement and learning.
They enjoy movement and hands-on activities the most.
It is hard for most of them to stay engaged while sitting in a hard, uncomfortable chair all day. They often get fidgety and restless. I would like the opportunity to offer them flexible seating options that will make them more comfortable while they are learning! A comfortable learning environment will lead to more student engagement, which means more success! My students come to school full of life and ready to learn! Just like adults get tired of sitting in hard chairs all day, students do too!
Studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable.
