My sixth graders are a group of unique individuals in a diverse community with high poverty rates. I provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment through collaboration, encouragement, a growth mindset, and a hands-on approach.
My goal is to provide students with a variety of seating options to enhance learning and their focus!
We work a lot on positive thinking and being mindful of how we can succeed. We have talked about flexible seating and they are very interested. Currently, I offer one stability ball, a wobble stool, seven stools, and three bean bags that are growing flat. They love it but the amount is limited and only a few students at a time are able to use those items. I also allow students to sit on the floor around the room whenever we have independent work time. I've noticed that when they are working around the room with or without a pillow their focus greatly increases. I want to offer more options to my students with the use of wobble stools and bean bags.
My Project
Research shows that allowing students to sit in comfortable, flexible seating options greatly enhances their focus. With a fulfilled project, my classroom would change quite a bit. I would be able to offer my students a variety of seating options based on what best meets their needs. Students would be able to use the wobble chairs and focus in our classroom. This options will allow them to become more comfortable, find a responsible working space and get the most out of our work times and classroom activities. All students love a variety of seat options to do their work in.
