My students need a rug to sit on when we’re having shared reading. The floors are hard and I like to have them come sit on the carpet with their books to follow along while reading.
Third grade is a crucial year in Pennsylvania, as it is the first year the students will take the state standardized assessment. Preparation is crucial, as most students are reading below a third grade level.
Most students in my classroom come from a low-income household.
I have a variety of ethnic backgrounds as the school district is located in an urban community. The school I teach in has grades K-5 with 5 of each grade, including a few types of Special Education classrooms. It has a wonderful morale with both students and educators.
My Project
Flexible seating is all the rage. It’s easy to find different surfaces in the classroom, however with a tiled floor, it makes it uncomfortable for kids to sit.
I like having kids come to the carpet for our reading lesson so they’re not sitting at their tables for every subject.
It gets them out of their seats and keeps all eyes on me. I also like having a space for kids to lay down and read or work on their math work.
This carpet will be big enough for each person to have their own spot and create personal space.
