My Students
My sophomore-junior AVID, Criminology, and Humanities class is unique in that my students regularly experience a blend of their core subject matter with the power of creativity, inquiry, and self-expression. Our small learning community is active and engaged, and in need of some help!
While our school is a small arts and sciences academy (about 500 9th through 12th graders), we are a public school who focuses on developing well-rounded young people who are strong in both their core academic studies, as well as the arts.
Approximately 71% of our students receive free or reduced rate lunch, and many young people who graduate from our school are the first in their families to go to college. Since we reformed our old public high school and opened our doors 8 years ago, we have overcome tremendous resources. Most of our success is due to our dedicated staff who is always puts positive relationships with students first, followed by integrating core content with creativity and real world problem-solving. Our students are bright, creative, and incredibly grateful for authentic experiences and materials when available.
My Project
Flexible seating will help with the creative process in my classroom. The desks we have are not always the most conductive to our creative mindset and learning. We have desks in here now which do not allow for much mobility or seating options at the two workstations.
Students tend to complain about sitting in their traditional seats because they don't feel comfortable in the seating that they do have currently.
The exercise balls would provide needed flexible seating for my students.
I want them to feel as if this learning environment is their home. When a student feels safe, nurtured and comfortable, they tend to be more productive.
