My students are a beautiful group of 3rd grade children with learning styles as diverse as their personalities. I work in a Title I school in Brooklyn, NY. A typical day in my classroom involves teaching students who come from varied socio-economic backgrounds and learning abilities. They love to learn and they love having freedom to move around the room. Some ask me to stand up while they work because it helps them to concentrate better. Others enjoy sitting on the floor. Some get distracted or fidgety and need alternative seating to help them get nervous energy out and re focus. Others prefer a quiet, cozy space to focus better. I would love to provide that for them. This is why I am seeking to create more choice in how my students learn through flexible seating and sensory learning.
My Project
Flexible seating is an alternative to 'traditional seating' in the classroom.
It promotes a collaborative learning environment where students are empowered by choice in what kind of learning space works best for them.
Students become excited and take more ownership in their learning when they feel they have the power to make choices in how they will learn and work in the classroom.
With the ability to make a choice to work in an environment that works for them, they are better able to communicate collaboratively while also fostering creative and critical thinking skills. Flexible seating also makes learning more fun, and that's always a plus!
All of the flexible seating I have chosen for our class will enhance learning. The wireless doorbell works to give students a sense of what to expect next by utilizing calming yet attention-grabbing sounds. The lap desks will give students the ability to work anywhere in the classroom comfortably. The Kore wobble chairs are adjustable and will allow students to sit at desks/higher tables while still allowing movement to get out nervous energy or fidgeting that can otherwise be distracting. They also provide stimulation while doing their work to help them focus and process information. The pillows are wonderful for when we do collaborative learning and they add a comfy and cozy element to the classroom. The rolling supply cart will allow students to be mobile and on the move during project based learning. The clip boards allow students to work anywhere, no desk required. All of these items will be extremely beneficial for those who need alternative ways to focus, and get the wiggles out!
