Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My mission every year is to teach knowledge and skills, nurture confidence and character, and inspire the passion needed for students to achieve their goals, excel in the competitive world, and positively impact the community. My elementary students come from our diverse community, with over 60% qualifying for free/reduced lunch.
As 82% of my students are children of color, I feel responsible to provide equitable opportunities to them to ensure that they have access to all the resources they need to reach their full potentials.
Unfortunately, the reality is that with limited funding in our school, we often cannot afford to buy items that the district does not deem "necessary." My students deserve the opportunity to have choices in where/how they sit to do their best learning, and this will better prepare them for decision-making in their futures as well.
My Project
My classrooms have been diverse in all aspects of learning and academic strengths/challenges, attention levels, ethnicity, financial and family backgrounds. I encourage learning independence, self confidence and awareness through student choice. This includes student seating. By giving students choices, I believe that they learn to take responsibility and accountability for their decisions, as well as learn what works best for their learning. This allows students to feel more comfortable in taking academic risks and further growing their minds.
Studies have shown that flexible seating such as bouncy seats, standing desks, rocking chairs, etc.
allow one to focus more. Many of my students need options that allow for movement, and these seating tools will greatly increase their attention span and frustration levels. Any donation is greatly appreciated by me, my students and their families.
