The second grade students in my class are part of a close-knit, rural community in northern Wisconsin. In fact, they are attending the same school that inspired me to become a teacher! They are respectful, hard-working, inquisitive learners. They come from all walks of life and face a multitude of challenges. However, they dream big and strive for success.
Despite many hardships, the students and parents of this community are motivated to succeed!
My students attend a Title I school, where 50% of our student population qualify for free and reduced lunch and many of the households are bilingual. We are very diverse in culture and socioeconomic statuses, especially for a town with a population of 910 people. However, our school district is a Blue Ribbon School, that was recently recognized as a Top Title I school in Wisconsin! These students are defying odds and statistics and soaring to success!
My Project
Our classroom environment focuses on individual uniqueness and collaboration. An important aspect of this environment is allowing students to create their best possible learning space. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. If students are comfortable and motivated, engaging them in content is easy. Students love the idea of making a choice that will benefit them and make them feel successful.
My students are more engaged within the content when given a choice of their best learning space.
The products that I have selected will help my students to have additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The Fidget Bands will attach to our classroom chairs to allow students to wiggle and fidget their feet without disrupting other learners. The Sit Spots will Velcro to our carpet in our whole-group area and will give students a sense of having their own, personal space. The Bean Bags will allow students to get comfortable around the room as they read. Students love to wobble while they work! The Wobble chairs will provide them with an opportunity to move without distracting others. Finally, the Lap Desk Trays will allow students to work anywhere around the room and provide ample space for students to read books, work on assignments, or learn on classroom devices. Overall, student engagement is my top priority. Flexible seating choices will allow my students the opportunity to find their best learning space to be successful.
