I work with nearly fifty kindergartners who are hungry to learn how to read and write. My school is a sought after Southern California public elementary school.
As a staff, we have been deeply entrenched in research-based, meaningful, effective professional development fostered by some of the most renowned researchers and staff developers in the country.
Our teachers have an intensely collaborative work ethic which rubs off on our students. We are constantly challenging ourselves to re-evaluate our practices and look for the most effective ways to reach our students.
While English is the predominant spoken language, we have multiple languages spoken and students from a wide variety of backgrounds. It is essential that we build strong reading and writing foundations for our students so that we can meet them at each individual entry point to move forward.
My Project
When children have choice and ownership of their learning, we know that they will make greater gains. Studies show that personalizing classroom spaces with students having ownership of where and how to position themselves to learn can account for a significant gain in academic growth.
Flexible seating within a classroom will promote a complex, living system of greater learning.
When children can wobble, bounce, kick, lean, or burrow, their oxygen flow, blood flow, and core strength all increase. We currently have a few flexible seating options in the classroom, and these tools act as an additional teacher in our environment. When students have the autonomy to create seating spaces for their own best learning, they are preparing themselves to absorb the most amount of learning they can from each of their experiences.
Flexible seating not only promotes student success but also promotes a shift in teacher pedagogy. When children are scattered around the room in pockets of comfortable learning spaces, the teacher can drift from student to student, giving each child the individualized attention they need. One size does not fit all in lessons or in seating. We cannot wait to create flexible seating arrangements in our classroom. In turn, we will become stronger and more flexible readers, writers, and thinkers.
