Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is special because it's filled with diversity. My students come from many different backgrounds and socioeconomic situations. Many cultures are blended into one classroom and we love it! 65% of my kiddos are considered to be economically disadvantaged, and 28% are english language learners. My school is a part of the HISD Leadership Magnet Program, and an IB World School for the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The school received its authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization in April of 2014. We have added a 50/50 Dual Language program, with Spanish as the target language in PK-4th grade.

My Project

Flexible seating will offer my student's OPTIONS in choosing their preferred spot to read and work in the classroom. Our futon will be a central spot in the classroom and, along with the beanbag, will offer a comfy spot to dive into a good book. Comfortable students are more calm, focused, and productive. The wobble chairs and balance balls will offer alternative seating options for active students who need movement in order to be successful. Research has proven that flexible seating and a warm environment produce higher rates in student's academic performance. It also encourages children to share space and supplies.
