Flexible Seating To Foster Independence

My students need the bean bags, along with the rest of the seating, will allow my students to sit wherever they are most comfortable and be most productive.

My Students

Our school is a hub for students to meet the majority of their basic needs. We want to continue to serve them and support the whole child.

Our middle school is a Title 1 middle school in Florida.

Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over half of our school receiving free lunch. Our school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Duval County. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spansih, Mandarin, Arabic and Burmese. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academic. Our school offers newcomer ELL program, IB Middle Years Program and PITSCO Stem Labs.

My Project

My students are a diverse group of young adults. They have worked all year to develop their math skills and independence in my classroom. Most of my students spend all day in desks that are often uncomfortable and make it difficult to focus while sitting in.

A choice in where to sit during class make seem like a small decision, but providing students with the choice will engage them in their learning and promote independence.

My students will have the options to sit in a desk, stools, camping chairs and other seats. The camping chairs will provide students with a different material to sit on and provide them with mobility. Bean bags will allow students to be comfortable while still being able to take notes. The stability wobbles will have a dual purpose for my kinesthetic learners and for those who want to be closer to the ground. This project will meet my students where they are and set them up for success. mores self aware, as well as increase their autonomy over their own well being.
