My students are some of the most amazing humans I know. During their 9th grade year, they are pushed to question who they are and what they believe in. Through their work in all of their classes, we ask them to think critically about their idividual identities and how that translates to their ‘place’ in their community and the world beyond. In English class specifically, we look at both individual identities and the historical identity of the United States.
My school prides itself on being a community school, encouraging teachers and students to treat the school as a second home.
Many of my students live at or below the poverty level, which limits the quantity of school supplies students are able to provide. In order to honor the school’s mission of being a community space where students feel at home, I am determined to make my classroom space a more inviting, comfortable space for us to learn and grow.
There has been significant research lately that shows that providing students with flexible seating options during class will support their engagement and understanding. In an effort to make my classroom a place where students feel at home and comfortable, I want to provide students with options to use floor cushions during independent reading, or collaborate using a whiteboard table during work time. Having multiple options available in my classroom will help support all students’ learning and engagement.
I am asking for donations to support multiple flexible seating options.
I have included floor cushions and lap desks for students who prefer reading in a comfortable space or doing independent work on the floor, saucer chairs for students who prefer more comfortable seating, and whiteboard tables for critical thinking and collaboration. I also included a set of speakers for the classroom so we can watch videos and listen to speeches during lessons.
