This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I see about 100 students a day as a STEAM Academy school teacher. All of my students live in a small, poor, migrant community. For many, school is an escape of the daily hardships they face at home. I feel it's my job to make their educational experience as engaging, satisfying, and nurturing as possible.

This new school year, I am so excited that I have so many students who are happy to be in my class and happy to do anything to please.

I want to make their job easier, so the opportunity to learn is greater.

My students are amazing young men and women who want to make good choices and try their hardest.

My Project

For my students this year, I want to provide more of a student-centered learning experience. One way to do that is to provide flexible seating. Who doesn't learn best when they are comfortable in their daily environment?

I believe classrooms that are student-centered will provide an exceptional learning experience for each and every student who walks through my door.

Most 6th grade students have the "wiggles" on a daily basis. Most of those wiggles come from nervousness, especially at the beginning of the year. Not only that, but my students are expected to sit for long periods of time and to be fully engaged in their learning.

I, myself, tend to get uncomfortable when expected to sit for long periods of time. I had the opportunity to sit on a "wobbly chair" for a grade level meeting. Not only did I not have to stress about being still, but I was also able to fully concentrate because I was able to move around a bit without distraction to the other members of my team.

Other teachers who currently use flexible seating options have seen an increase in attention and motivation from those students who have the opportunity to use flexible seating. Students can stay focused in class so they can do a better job. This helps in both individual and group settings.

My goal is to offer flexible seating options for all students who would like to choose how they learn best. I want all of my students to have the same opportunity to choose the most comfortable learning spot in my room.

This will change my students' lives for the better because they will better to be able to focus and feel empowered because they are taking responsibility for their own learning.
