My Students

My students are an innovative, creative and active learners. They are caring, kind and particularly good at being thinkers and problem solvers. They love learning in a variety of ways and spaces, and I try to incorporate different ways of teaching and learning everyday. We utilize computers and technology, we incorporate our rocker chairs, futon, pillows and carpet squares into our learning space in addition to movement in our learning.

We do a form of modified flexible seating in our classroom, where students select a place to sit to work that will best fit their learning needs: I encourage them to get the supplies they need and to choose a space that will best meet their learning needs.

They can utilize whiteboards, offices, headphones, rocker seats, stools, desks, pillows, and carpet squares. I am looking to add more variety to our chair selection, including a kidney table for small group meeting instruction in addition to another place to work. Furthermore, I will also be purchasing wobble seats, wiggle seats, "fidget" bands for chairs, and other tools to add to my students' choice and learning selections.

My Project

I am implementing flexible seating in my classroom because my students are incredibly diverse and active learners. They are a wonderful group of social students who need a variety of different resources in order to be successful.

One of the things I have discovered after working with my class for about a month now is that they all work best from various learning positions, seats, and places in our classroom.

I have already provided many of the tools for my students to assist in differentiated choice as far as flexible seating. The things I have already purchased myself include rocker/scoop seats, yoga mats, lap desks, and many other resources. I am now seeking some assistance to take flexible seating in our room a step further.

I would like more options for my students to pick from beyond what I have already offered. The reason I have asked for wobble chairs is to offer more variety in seats. Students will have the option to sit at a high table, a low table, a desk, or sit/lay on the carpet.

In choosing to sit at a high table, they have the option of sitting with a regular chair, a chair with a fidget band (one of the pieces I am requesting), a stool, or a wobble chair. They may also choose to sit on a regular chair with a wiggle seat (one of the stability balance disks you see in my material request). These wiggle seats can also be used on the floor, in addition to the soft pad, a carpet spot, or a pillow. I have also requested some bath mats that students will use to lay on.

Adding these materials to our learning space will make it even more creative and innovative, and a place to learn, grow, and succeed!
