My students need options for seating in my classroom. With adjustable height desks, students will be able to use various types of seating at different heights and even stand if they’d like.
I teach striving readers in grades K-5. As I enter my 5th year in the role of Reading Specialist, I am convinced that half of my job is teaching skills and strategies, and the other half of my job is to create an environment where students feel safe, comfortable, and cared for.
My goal is to help students become independent, engaged learners who see themselves as readers.
“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift.” —Kate DiCamillo
My Project
Providing the learning environment that kids need, flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking.
Why flexible seating?
~ Choice: Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment
~ Physical health: Children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow and core strength.
~ Comfort: An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student.
Evolving the classroom space to meet students’ individual needs impacts how they learn, how they interact, and the entire learning experience.
