Flexible Seating: The Classroom of the Future Today!
My students need options for places to work, like this Foamnasium seating group and book bins as a way to keep their things organized.

My Students
I work in a diverse school setting. In past years, up to 50% of my students have been English Language Learners. The main languages represented are Vietnamese and Spanish. However, I've also had Russian, Tagalog, Hmong, Chinese, and many others! I love the diversity and learning about other cultures that happens, both for my students and myself! It is is also a high poverty school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
For the past year, I have been exploring different ways to get my students moving more.
I've been able to receive some balance balls for them to sit on at their tables and 6 stand-up desks. They move around during the day depending on the activity and where they are comfortable.
My Project
I am continuing to experiment with flexible seating in my classroom. We are using stand-up desks, round tables, and yoga balls.
Research had been done on the benefits of flexible seating choices.
Giving kids choices helps them discover what learning space they prefer. Depending on the arrangement, it can also encourage cooperative and active learning. As our lives and livelihoods have changed, so should the way our schools look. I want my students to have the opportunity to make choices, work together, learn from each other, and move more while in school!
Since I want my students to have options at different times of the day, I did not give them assigned seats. However, this means they don't have a desk to keep their things in. I would like to have these book bins to keep their things in. They can just take their notebooks, books, etc. with them wherever they choose to work. I would also like a few more seating options.
