My Students
We are a high poverty, low income school. We are a Pre-K to 5th grade school where the entire student body is able to receive free breakfast and lunch daily. We are in a military area, so many of our children have one or both parents in the military. Many parents are deployed for the school year. We are now a global school, learning about other cultures and people around the world!
Teaching social skills is very important in our school environment, many children do not know what it means to share or how to collaborate with others.
Each teacher is like the parent of their classroom. Many students are in a single parent home, being raised by grandparents or sometimes older siblings. As a staff, we know the importance of giving our students a "family" and knowing they are safe, loved and cared for - at least during the day at school! Accepting others for their differences is hard for adults, young children do it much better so we want to foster that and continue to build it up in our school. That is one focus of being a global school.
My Project
Over the past four years I have had about 100 students in my classroom! It has been a pleasure to teach all these boys and girls everything from reading and math to conflict resolution and team building. Unfortunately, with 100 students using the same few floor mats and cushions they are now ready to be replaced.
Flexible seating has been a great addition to my classroom over the last four years, but now it is time to replace some of the items!
My students make their own choice where and how to learn and work. Some children sit at a desk, a few stand, some lay on the floor, many use stools, and a couple use lap desks. It is time to replace the floor mats and cushions as they are ripping and falling apart. Although we can still use them since I have taped them up, but it would be nice to have new mats and cushions.
