I have a classroom full of inquisitive, insightful, and creative 7-9 year olds. To see their hunger for knowledge is what makes me so happy to be their teacher and join them on that journey of education. Some of these kids may not have come from the best home situation but when they enter those school doors they leave that all behind and become the catalyst to their big, bright, boundless future. I am so blessed to be their teacher.
Gone are the days where the desks are lined up in nice, tidy rows. Studies show that students learning in the 21st century learn in different ways. Students will use the book bins, lap desks, and storage items to choose a place that is conducive for their learning needs. This may mean sitting, standing, lying, bending, or changing from subject to subject. I am excited about the clear pockets and glue sticks that will allow the students to move to different areas of the classroom and work. My old teacher desk is the standard one that you have seen for years but the one I am asking for will serve dual purpose by allowing me to store all the binders and supplies that I need for the classroom as well as an area to do work. Students will use the Scholastic News and Time for Kids to help with become proficient in nonfiction texts which data shows is a need. I will use the rectangle tables on the lowest setting so students can sit on the floor with the rug and pillows and also allow them a chance for collaborative work which is an important 21st century skill.. Contrary to some beliefs, flexible seating does not mean there is no structure. It only means that students have a little more control and support in choosing what is best for them in an institution that may not provide many choices.
