Many students at my school are involved in so many things or work jobs because they are helping out their parents or saving for college or paying their own bills. I have discovered that my students work better in the limited alternative seating I have added to the classroom. They fight for the chairs, claiming the space as their own. Many come from homes that may not give them comfort or joy, so I want them to find happiness and home at school. Their focus and their desire to learn is evident when they sit in comfort. This was really brought to light when they wanted to have a Socratic seminar sitting in the seats. They moved all the desks out of the way and circled up the few chairs and bean bags I have to create an environment that fostered discussion.
The students' discussion was amazing and focused and kids were comfortable and at ease.
I strive to create a pleasant classroom for my kids each and every year by decorating with a theme, and adding new seating. My goal is to have a desk-less classroom.
My Project
In my English classroom I often encourage students to read silently. By having alternative seating, students will be able to read in comfort. Additionally they will be able to circle up in small groups and discuss their novels in these comfortable settings. Research shows that creating a comfortable and positive environment encourages student growth.
Through funding this project students will be able to have a home away for home where they are encouraged to learn and work independently or collaboratively.
The adjustable tables will also help them work on their computers while still sitting in a casual environment. The positive feedback my students have already given me regarding the limited alternative seating I have is proof enough that this needs to happen.
